Cornerstone designed an expansion of the existing Duveneck Elementary School in Palo Alto. This expansion provides three new classroom buildings on the site as well as retrofitting an existing building to accommodate an expanded library. The new classrooms include two new single story wood framed buildings and one two story steel framed building. The site has been identified as having potential dynamic and differential settlements due to liquefaction, and the original foundation recommendation for the new buildings was for mat slabs. Cornerstone worked with the project geotechnical engineer (Cornerstone Earth Group) to eliminate the mat slab and use location specific analysis to minimize foundation size for each building.
